With contributions by 24 contemporary artists hailing from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, The Travellers looks into the experience of the generation whose identity has been formed between two extreme conditions: the restricted mobility of the region’s past and the accelerated mobility of today.
The Travellers accompanies an exhibition of the same title, first shown at Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw in 2016, and at Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn in 2017. The small book resembling a travel guide consists of three parts. It includes newly commissioned texts, in which the artists reflect on personal experiences as migrants or travellers. The second part provides an overview of all artworks presented in the show with descriptions of each one. The book ends with an essay about mobility, nationalism, and the postcolonial condition, authored by Magdalena Moskalewicz, who is both the curator of the exhibition and the editor of the book.
