Shapes & Distances
Ingel Vaikla
Publication coordination by Laura Toots
Texts by Alicja Melzacka and Laura Toots
Shapes and Distances by Ingel Vaikla tells in the first place the story of a city and its inhabitants. But it also indirectly tells about the filmmaker and her doubts: her struggle with the question of the representation of Eastern Europe and with her own authority in the process of meaning production. This second ‘meta-meaning’ is communicated through particular directing and editing choices. The film counters the increasingly popular mode of depicting the post-Soviet cities.
Published on the occasion of Ingel Vaikla’s solo exhibition Shapes and Distances at Beursschouwburg, Brussels (8.02.–21.03.2020) in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM), Tallinn
